“As a mechanical engineer James’ work is solid. We had to design and build a vehicle frame out of aluminum sheet metal. It required unique cuts, bends, bulk head supports, and riveting in order to get it together. Three of the four sheet metal fabricators I contacted didn’t want to do the job because of the difficulty and custom/artsy like aspects of it. One skilled fabricator did take the job, mostly because it was a unique challenge for them. I don’t think the fabricator had to ask James even one question about the cad models and drawings. When I picked up the completed product the project manager told me they didn’t have a single problem or conflict with the cad models and drawings James produced – all the pieces fit together perfectly. That fabricator now has a large photograph of the vehicle (made with the frame they fabricated) on their wall which demonstrates to their clients and potential clients the unique sheet metal work they can do.
He knows and is honest about when he is getting out of his knowledge base and/or area where he is possibly less productive. Then we talk about how we should move forward. Usually I give him the green light to learn a little, and I go forward with him.
And when it comes to integrating the engineering from others of other specific disciplines (in my case electric motors) I use James as the guy to help me understand, manage and integrate the different disciplines.
